About SUMUKHA VEENA 

I have had many enquiries about the structure of the Sumukha Veena and how it is different from Chitravina and Mohan Veena. So I thought of sharing a description of Sumukha Veena with you all.

Sumukha veena is a new adaptation of the acoustic slide guitar into Carnatic music (which implies that there have been earlier adaptations of the slide guitar into Carnatic music by various musicians, and this is another new adaptation of the same family of instruments, but with a different structure). It is nothing but a modified acoustic slide guitar.

Initially the modifications were made on a regular acoustic guitar with the help of Mridanga/Khanjira Vidwan Sri A V Kashinath from Bangalore. Later, I got it manufactured by a Mohan Veena manufacturer Mrs.Ria Biswas (who is the daughter of legendary Late Baba Sindhu Biswas) from Kolkata. 

Sumukha veena is made of Himalayan pine wood for the upper body and rose wood for the fingerboard. It  is a little  smaller  in size than Mohan Veena with entirely different strings alignment.  (Also Not having chikaari or drone strings, to mention a few differences) 

Sumukha veena has 8 main strings aligned in a specific manner , that is  s-p-sS-pP  capital letters indicating the higher octave, which is  in 1+1+3+3 pattern.

These strings are tuned by guitar pegs placed at the top.

The 1st string which is closest to the body of the player is Mandra shadja (one octave below the tonic note).

2nd string that is going away from the body of the player is the mandra panchama (the 5th note from the 1st string).

3rd, 4th and 5th strings are aligned close to each other and are to be played together. They are tuned to adhara shadja,  Mandra shadja (an octave below the tonic note) and Aadhaara shadja (tonic note) respectively. 

6th , 7th and 8th strings are also aligned close to each other and are to be played together. They are tuned to middle octave panchama,  Mandra panchama and middle octave panchama (5th note from the tonic note) respectively (this dual octave string alignment concept is inspired by Gottuvadya).

Sumukha Veena consists of a resonator; a bridge on top of the resonator  slightly to the right; a smaller bridge of 2 cm height on the neck of the fingerboard; and a small metal stick mounted on each of the bridges.  The main strings pass through these metal sticks and this helps in bringing out a brighter around that sustains for longer. 

It has a wooden tail-piece attached on the extreme right to which the main strings are anchored.

It has a fingerboard on which the fret lines are marked to help the player locate the positions of the notes accurately while playing.  

Sumukha Veena has 12 or 13(optional) sympathetic strings (that resonate/sympathise/respond when the main strings are plucked) aligned on the fingerboard. They pass upon a very small bridge 

underneath the main strings. These sympathetic strings are  tuned using the guitar pegs placed to the left of the fingerboard .

It has a 'koda' (pot like support that is attached behind the neck of the guitar- this does not work like a resonator).

Playing technique 

It is a plucked, stringed instrument.

Veena nakha/metal plectrum/Guitar plectrum is used to pluck the strings either in a direction away from the player or back and forth to achieve faster plucking. 

A cylindrical slider made of polytetrafluoroethylene (popularly known as teflon) material (credits to Maestro Chitravina Ravikiran, and special thanks to Vidwan Chitravina Ganesh who gave me a teflon slider years ago) is used to slide on the strings  backed by the left hand  little finger and ring finger which keep flowing on the main strings to mute the unwanted sounds as the slider moves up and down.

This is a brief description of the structure of Sumukha Veena and its playing.

 this is one of its kind I have modified the acoustic slide guitar  according to my ideas, worked upon these ideas for 16 years before finally getting this instrument made.

Happy birthday to the Legendary GNB. (111th birth anniversary ) 

Ever since my childhood when I started listening to this lightning music, I have been an admirer of his virtuosity and brilliance and that magical voice justifies anything that is sung, keeping the timeless audience spellbound on their toes, his charismatic personality is obvious in his music. 

Energy bank, control and the weight in the voice, deep musical knowledge in both Lakshya and Lakshana, precision in brikas, traditional yet unconventional, presence of mind, sense of humour, compassion, love, valour, bhakti, and ever exploring. 

All the above qualities in one person?  is he really a person then? being a Devi upasaka he had musically assumed the form of Shakthi within him to spread carnatak music. 

And that is none other than one and only GNB. 

G N Balasubrahmaniam, as a musician, as a Guru, as a Composer  shined like thousand suns in carnatic scenario. 

Being one of those thousands of musicians who come under the lineage of legendary GNB I wish a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE GANDHARVA Of carnatic music. 

The amount of inspiration and motivation  that  I have gathered from his music is not something that I can put it in words.

What Would you think covid 19 has done to many of us?

Yes it was indeed unfortunate that so many have lost their lives and near and dear ones. 

But on a practical ground when we think of our adaptation during this period, it is something incredible. 

Some of us thought that we have enough money so we are safe, 

Some of us  thought that we are 

well-educated so nothing can touch us, 

Some of us thought that we are very healthy, strong and hygienic, so nothing will happen, 

But somehow it attacked all the above categories, only the lucky ones are those who would have had a great immune system. 

Road workers and their children, those who work in the fields, mines or anyone who directly comes into contact with mud-related work would have naturally developed a good immune system and are the less affected ones, it is just one observation. 

So many would have realised the value of mother/wife who silently does all the household work despite the fact that they also have their own career only when the mother/wife  are in home quarantine. 

Some would have realised how much they should be indebted to their office for giving so much of peace in life 😂😂 (work from home impact) as they realise that they are the 'best' couple under the sun. 

Men learnt to make coffee, oh sorry should put it in order , so learnt to switch on the stove, learnt to make decoction, rice, sambar, saaru, chapathi, dosa, ahaa what not? (so women are happy) 

Initially school kids (though little kids between 3-5 years old richly deserved to be pampered at home) and many students were happy thinking that they don't have to go to school ever again, but those who are good at studies who always wanted to prove that they are the highest scorers were disappointed. 

The politicians who were always in treasure hunt were so happy to have elongated the corona waves for ten plus months to prove that in India they are the wildest beings. ( corruption is the origin of politics or vice-versa,  that too as a whole system, (not all politicians though) disgusting. 

Doctors, nurses and many volunteers worked day and night for the welfare of mankind but the hospitals corruption never stopped. 

Business companies, be it employers or employees, artisans, artistes, musicians, teachers, sports people, hotels, temples, from rich to poor everybody suffered financial loss as the whole country/world was under the lockdown for months. No one asked covid for reservation on caste /minority / religion based, neither 'it' asked anyone. 

Staying at home some started yoga though it takes a lot more to call a 'yogi', many started trying out new news snacks, dishes, recipes and obviously became Bhogis. 

Everybody became court musicians of Facebook. So many child prodigies popped up. Music concerts became so common every morning till evening Live / premiere. So many new covid season 😂music sabhas popped up.  Some started to read novels and so on (including me). 

Those who always cry about their own problems had to listen to everyone's problem now and were deprived of their chance. 

Funny thing is so far we were under the impression that being positive is very good but this corona came and changed the meaning of the very word to somewhat scary, (covid positive) 

'Stay home stay safe' quote became quarantine 🙄. 

Anyone who walked towards hospital for sneeze, cold or temperature treatment considered covid positive, looked like a wholesale deal. 

Having said all these we also realised we are actually capable of facing any situation only thing we need to be thrown into the water. 

The take home is face situations as it comes fight it and learn from it and move onnnn.
